Physical Architecture
The "TOUGH" specification replaces traditional multi-piece plastic shells with a monolithic, single-piece resin molding that makes the card 18 times more bend-resistant than standard SD cards. Sony achieved this by completely eliminating the easily broken write-protect switch and the thin plastic connector ribs, removing the two most frequent physical points of failure.
Environmental Resilience
Sealed to an IP68 rating, the card is completely dustproof and can withstand immersion in up to 5 meters of water for 72 hours. It is also drop-proof up to 5 meters and features built-in shielding against X-rays, magnetic fields, static electricity, and extreme operating temperatures ranging from -13°F to 185°F (-25°C to 85°C).
